original documents discussing the disappearance of anti-apartheid activist Siphiwo Mtimkulu. the first page is hand written by Bishop to someone named 'Tony?'. it is dated in Bishop's hand 15/6/82. Tony was almost certainly a newspaper editor, as he discusses the possibility of sending out a photographer and a reporter to the squatter camp. parts of the letter are neatly crossed through so possibly it was never sent. there is also a 4 page typed out report signed by Bishop titled 'Sipiwo Mtimkulu, Background to Disappearance'..this document discusses the background to Siphiwo's disappearance, his failing health and the unlikely story that was being circulated that he had fled to Lesotho. at this point all avenues were being investigated to attempt to trace this young man who had been detained several times by the apartheid police.. Bishop was chairman of the Civil Rights League and he was helped in his work by his wife Di and Molly Blackburn.both Bishop and Blackburn were harassed by the apartheid government and received death threats. on the 28th december 1985 Bishop and Blackburn were killed in a head on car accident that also took the life of the driver of the other vehicle. Bishop's wife Di and Molly's sister were also in the vehicle but they survived the accident with injuries. many years later it was revealed at the truth and reconciliation commission that Siphiwo had been abducted and murdered by apartheid agents. the agents who testified to his murder were all given full amnesty. prior to his murder it appears that an attempt had been made to kill mtimkulu with poison and this had caused his deteriorating health. Brian Bishop was posthumously awarded the order of Luthuli in Silver by the President of South Africa. these are important and unusual original documents from south africa's apartheid history.
