528 pages (complete). An amiable copy. A rather SPECIAL copy as the previous owner signature is that of GEORGE AUGUSTUS KOLB, a member of one of the first 1820 SETTLER parties to land at Algoa Bay in the Cape Colony, as a member of Thomas Owen's party. Owen's party was small, it left Gravesend in December 1819 and arrived at Algoa the following April. Owen's party came on the 'Nautilus', a ship that was a regular transporter. Kolbé's great grandson asserts that George Augustus came not as a settler but as a missionary. Kolbé who was a trained chemist, and his wife Msrgaret, were certainly young, 20 and 19 respectively. He was, says his great grandson, a better farmer than missionary! The signature is confirmed as matching that on his marriage certificate . The signature is a little faded but still warmly legible. It is on the preface page. The book was almost certainly rebound at some stage as half leather. The boards are scruffy, grubby, worn, marked from damp storage conditions. The leathered corners and spine are worn, aged. The spine is benign and placid. The boards are steady and sound. Marbled endpapers (fresh-faced and hale). The very early pages have damp tide-marks. Beyond these, the pages have mild evidence of age with handling marks etc fore and aft. There are very occasional pepperings of foxing. Otherwise, the pages are clean, clear, keen, agreeably assured, amiable, confident, certain and companionable. A RARE collectable!. Our orders are shipped using tracked courier delivery services.
