12 volumes (complete) of three Fielding novels. A kindly set from the Navarre Society. From a limited edition of 2000 copies. All are covered in caramel cloth. The boards are steady and sound. Of interest is the gift inscription on the frontispage of "Tom Jones". From the headmaster of the school at Keetmanshoop in South West Africa, O P Tarr to O Lohff. Of German descent, and of a somewhat nationalist bent, Lohff was not a Nazi - unlike some in the area. He and his wife came to meet Fritz Kolbe (then at the German Consulate in Cape Town) and Mrs Lohff became Kolbe's mistress. When Lohff returned to Germany to carry on working at the Foreign Office, the Lohff's agreed to look after his son. Kolbe was to become, during the war years, one of the most efficient and important anti-Nazi spies for the Americans. Whilst his contribution has been disputed, his information was largely new to the Americans and to his contact, Dulles. Today, the value of Kolbe's espionage has been officially recognised by the German government. "The History of Tom Jones - A Foundling" - 6 Volumes. The top trims are gilded (dulled). The boards have general, casual wear from handling and shelving. They are scuffed, a little marked, still affable. The contents are in excellent condition. Thick, healthy, attractive, clean and clear, companionable. "Amelia" - 3 volumes. Gilt top trims that are dulled and tipped with rust. The boards and contents are as with above. "The History of the Adventures of Joseph Andrews and of his friend Mr Abraham Adams - written in the imitation of the Manner of Cervantes" - 2 volumes. Condition of the books as with above. "The Life of Mr Jonathan Wild The Great" - in one volume. As with the other volumes. This is a pleasingly domestic set, perfect for ownership and readership. Please note that should the set need be posted to the outside of South Africa extra postal charges may be required. fk. Our orders are shipped using tracked courier delivery services.
