A set of calendars from the South African Permanent Building Society which were produced especially as gifts. Each calendar reproduced paintings from South African painters, South African art collections, South African painted scenes. Complete set from 1952-1968. Others for 1976 and 1977. The illustrations were produced with an eye to suggest that the receiver framed them. 1952: storage wear about the edges, foxing on the front sheet, storage marks on the final information page, rusted clasp; a series of historic scenes. 1953: wear and tear along the top of the sheets, rusted clasp, wear from storage along the edges. The front page has an annotation, foxing. Other pages are fresh and vivid. Again scenes of early urban settlements. 1954: thin protective sheet which is worn, tanned, foxed. The initial sheet has some very light foxing along the bottom edge. Collection of travel scenes by W J Burchell. All are bright and fresh. 1955: Reproductions from George French Angas and Samuel Daniell. Scruffy protections sheet. Illustrations are bright and fresh. 1956: Two copies: one in English, another in Afrikaans. Scenes from Thomas Bowler. The illustrations are fresh. 1957: Two copies. Scenes from Thomas Baines. Protection sheet is scruffy. Sheets are fresh-faced and most pleasing. 1958: scenes by George French Angas of his travels in South Africa. Scruffy protection sheet. Otherwise, the following sheets are bright, healthy. 1959: scenes by Lumley Graham. An attractive copy. 1960: Cape scenes from 'JW'. The sheets (aside from the protection sheet) are as new! 1961: more scenes from the mysterious "JW". Again, the sheets are as new. 1962: Scenes by Thomas Bowler. The protection sheet and first sheet are a little foxed. The illustration itself is unblemished. The other sheets are smart, confident. 1963: 2 copies. Both are refreshingly bright, neat, as new! 1964: Nineteenth century scenes including Bowler and Louis Alberti. A most gratifying copy. 1965: 3 copies. Scenes from Thomas Baines, Frederick Timson I'Ons, Thomas Slater. All are gratifyingly fresh-faced and vibrant. As if new! 1966: Reproductions from "Birds, Flowers and Scenery of the Cape of Good Hope" illustrated by Christopher Webb Smith. Chic, serene, fresh, vibrant. 1967: Cape Town scenes by De Meillon. A healthy, smart, fresh-faced copy. 1968: Scenes from George French Angas. The reproductions are vibrant, vivacious, as if new. 1976: Four copies (three in English, one in Afrikaans). Scenes of Transport in nineteenth century South Africa. All are in convivial, charming, clean condition. 1977: Further transport scenes. No protection sheet. The first sheet has storage wear and marks. The illustrations are amiable, bright, healthy. It is VERY RARE to encounter such a collection of these admirably conceived and diligently produced calendars. All of the scenes here are suitable for framing, for reference, for resource, for enjoyment. fk. Our orders are shipped using tracked courier delivery services.
