A handwritten letter by Sir Theophilus Shepstone as he ended his station in the Transvaal. It refers - obliquely - to the death of his son, George at the Battle of Isandhlwana. The letter is dated February 25th 1879 - a month after the fateful battle. The letter is addressed to Miss Chrissie Meintjes of Pretoria: "Standerton - Feb 25 1879 / My dear little Chrissie / I was very glad to get your note because it show me that you had not forgotten me. // Tell papa with my kind regards that I got his kind letter of condolence and am very much obliged to him for it. I was in hopes that I should have the pleasure of seeing you all again before leaving the Transvaal but they seem so much to require me down in Natal that I shall not be able to do so. // I must therefore say goodbye to you. I wish you every happiness, I shall always remember your cheerful and happy face, and how pleasant you always made my visit to your house.// Please remember me most kindly to Mama and Papa and to Mrs Minnaar and any other ladies young or old who care for me and believe me my dear Chrissie remain very affectionately yours // [signed] Theoophilus Shepstone // Miss Meintjes / Pretoria". The letter is in good condition. The ink is bold. The signature confident. The paper bears the evidence of use and the passing of the years with age-related marks and foxing blots There are some folding creases. However, the letter is clear, healthy, strong. fk.
