Eight issues. A VERY RARE set of the first issues of "The State" - a journal published by the Closer Union Societies, which promoted the National Convention that was negotiating the future of a united South Africa. As it stated in the first issue: " 'The State' will be conducted on absolutely non-racial and non-party lines ... Every issue ... will contain a review of the events of the preceding month in so far as they affect South Africa, a number of essays on matters directing affecting Union ... papers on the history, scenery, and art of South Africa illustrated fromm drawing or photographs and a regular article on the commerce and finance of the month ...". Each issue also has loose leaf illustration/ woodcut of a senior political figure by Joseph Solomon. These are suitable for framing if desired. The contents have evidence of the passing years and of happy use throughout. There are user creases, wear. They are tanned and a little foxed. They are also certain, generous, clear. No. 4 - April: the covers are foxed, marked, stained, worn. They are firm and sure. The contents have evidence of age and use throughout. They are a little tanned. They are also clear, convivial, assured. No. 5 - May: This copy has been subjected to damp storage conditions. The covers are much worn, much marked, stained all about. They are resolutely secure. The contents have wrinkles from the damp, storage, age and handling. The contents are tanned, marked. They are also secure, sure, competent. No. 6 - June: The covers have some foxing, scuffing, wear. They are comfortable, certain. The contents are lightly tanned, comfortable, companionable. No. 10 - October: The contents are worn, marked, stained, creased. They are secure and sure. The contents have tanning, wear about the edges, some smears and freckles of foxing, comfortable, certain. Vol 2, No. 12 - December 1909: The front cover has a contents label affixed. The covers have wear, foxing, marks, certain. The contents have storage and handling marks throughout, with some wear, some creases. They are tight, benign, convivial, confident. fk.
