Volume I: "The Cape Colony from 1795 to 1828, the Zulu Wars of Devastation, and the formation of New Bantu Communities". The boards have some wear to edges and corners from shelving and handling. They have some light marks, scuffing. The spine has wear to head and foot. The boards and spine are steady and sure. The guttering along the frontispage is cracked. The security of the book is unaffected. The papertrims are flecked with foxing. The pages are freckled with foxing here and there, some tanning about the rims. In general they are thick, clean and clear, healthy. Volume II: "The Cape Colony from 1828 to 1846, Natal from 1824 to 1845, and Proceedings of the Emigrant Farmers from 1836 to 1847". Fourth edition. The boards have shelving wear about the edges, some storage marks. The end papers have mild wear from use and age. Previous owner stamp on the frontispage. The papertrims have freckles of foxing. The contents also have some odd flurries of foxing. The pages are yet, comfortable, clean, clear, competent, benevolent. Volume III: "The Cape Colony from 1846 to 1860, Natal from 1845 to 1857, British Kaffraria from 1847 to 1860, and the Orange River Sovereignty and the Transvaal Republic from 1847 to 1858." Third edition, pub. 1916. They have light wear about the edges and corners, head and foot of the spine, from shelving. The boards are steady. The papertrims are most pleasing. They are bright, fresh, clean, confident. Vol IV: Fourth edition, 1919. The boards have light shelving wear, storage marks, scuffing. They are steady and sure. The papertrims are tanned. The pages have very shallow tanning about the rims. They are otherwise certain, clean and clear, convivial. Volume V: Third edition, 1920. The boards have wear about the edges and corners, head and foot of the spine, from shelving and storage. They are scuffed and rubbed. The boards are sound, sturdy. The papertrims have some shelving marks and tanning. The pages are tanned about the rims. Otherwise, they are clean and clear, confident, benevolent, certain.
