304 pages (complete). Inscribed from Charlotte Moore to Sir Matthew Nathan, Governor of Natal from 1907-1909 (who was more successful as an imperial administrator than at home - he was Under-Secretary for Ireland at the time of the Easter Uprising and was persuaded to resign due to his handling of the situation), on the frontispage. Moore dated the inscription, "Maritzburg, Natal. 1907. Sept. 9th." Moore also inscribed a lengthy paen to Queen Victoria's Health on the half-title page: "The Queen's Health - Written 1899 / The Queen! God Bless Her!/ In our hand we hold/ A cup filled with the tears that rise/ To a hundred million loving eyes/ Better than wine brimmed round with priceless gold!// The Queen! God Bless her!/ That little hand/ Trembling with age and many cares,/ Which all her people's labour shares,/ Grups firm that people's heart in every land.// The Queen! God Bless her!/ Down the tides of Time/ Will ride a ship with sails that swell/ Going to land to land to tell/ Victoria's loving sway bound clime to clime.// The Queen! God Bless her!/ Bless still - To show/ That Right was beautiful and strong/ That nothing might prevail with wrong/ That Good and Truth was worth the strife,/ She made the story, on her life With Golden letters glow!" The verse may give indication of the tenor of the book. However, Moor's story is an excellent example of fiction-prose at the time, post-war. It is also an exceptionally pleasing copy. The blue boards have light wear, light scuffing from shelving and age. They are benign and sure. The spine is just a little sunned from shelving. The contents are most pleasing. Whilst the page edges are tanned from age, the pages are clear, clean, convivial, assured, most agreeable. fk. Our orders are shipped using tracked courier delivery services.
