House Dogs and Sporting Dogs: their varieties, points, management, training, breeding, rearing and diseases, Meyrick, John
1 Meyrick, John House Dogs and Sporting Dogs: their varieties, points, management, training, breeding, rearing and diseases
John van Voorst, London 1861 First Edition Hardcover Fair No Jacket Hardcover
260 pages (complete). A resolute copy of this small handbook to dogs. It is entertainingly opinionated and acute. Of Pugs, for example, Meyrick says, "Pugs are neither graceful nor clever, and they belie any fancied resemblance to Bull-dogs, by being the greatest cowards among dogs. They are, however, tolerably affectionate." Of the Pomeranian: "The Pomeranian is certainly a pretty and graceful dog, but he has the disadvantage of being neither clever, nor affectionate, and is, in addition, possessed of a yapping restlessness that makes him quite insupportable to most people." Of the Colley: "The only dog to be compared to him for sagacity is the Poodle; but there is this difference between them, that the performances of the Poodle, who has little affection for his master, consist in useless tricks, which he goes through without much exertion to himself, and with the prospect of an immediate reward, - while the Colley spares himself no trouble in his master's service, and seems to act from a sense of duty alone." There are chapters on training, maintenance, breeding etc. The boards are much worn and scuffed all about. The spine is much worn. Both the boards and the spine are steady and sound. The contents have evidence of avid use throughout. There are some annotations. The pages have some wear, handling marks, age marks. Nonetheless, they are comfortable, convivial, clear, certain, companionable. fk
